What is a digital transcription kit do?

I'm looking to become a digital transcriber, but do not understand the need for a kit. It seems I should be able to play my audio files on my computer and type out while playing. So what is the need for a digital transcription kit?

It is likely that contains the software, hardware and perhaps (in the form of a pedal) that will be used to control playback.
