Elf stars Will Ferrell as a human raised by Santa's elves on the way to the big city in search of their human roots. With the premise that hokey, Elf does not deserve to be funny, but in the hands Ferrell comedy skillfully it is safer.

Elf Buddy (Ferrell) can be human, but nobody has had the courage to tell him. Raised in a North Pole seems hilarious as the set of "A Christmas Gumby" (complete with stop-motion characters and pimps, doll snow), Buddy can not understand why it is so different. When Papa Elf (Bob Newhart doing their best work in years) clues him in his line, suddenly the Things begin to make sense. After the eccentricity of the North Pole Elf establishment, the rest of the movie plays fairly traditionally through the comparison and may have fallen completely flat if not for the gut-busting innocence and sometimes torrential braided every inch of the great Will Ferrell.

For example, meetings with the father of Buddy playing with the predictable failure of vacation. James Caan, who plays dad lost Ferrell term is a generic caricature Scrooge with no time for the family or the joy of Christmas. Of course, Buddy is working his magic on it, so you can find the rest. In the way, of course, Christmas is in trouble.
