What is a dot matrix and why is it on the windshields of cars?

I recently purchased a VW Jetta 2008 and had the car tinted. When I in dye asked if there could be a tint strip at the top to the windshield, the sales rep said that the dye can not continue without problems, because there is a dot matrix. Why dot matrix put in cars?

The dot matrix is the front (dye on the top of the windshield) glass rolled at the factory. If you try to dye over this .. it will look like a screen because of the uneven surface. If you ever have to replace your windscreen you can order the windshield of an aftermarket without the dye at the top.
