What is the best credit card to apply for the first time?

I have years of excellent history of rental time, but not credit because I've never been in debt (always pay bills on time) go figure. I was wondering which credit cards may apply for first time. Wal-Mart credit card rejected me because I have no credit, and I'm looking for something small so you can put things on the card and pay them off quickly to provide some form of credit. Any suggestions?
