I've long been a big fan of psychedelic rock music. The type of music that lets your imagination. The type of music that has a depth of bit closer to him. Music is not only the verse, chorus, verse, chorus, but is released into song structures of exploration and new musical ideas. Not Sure that there is a band that more fully achieves the ideal of truly psychedelic music of Olivia Tremor Control.
The Olivia Tremor Control released only two albums. 1996's of music from the unrealized film script, Dusk at Cubist Castle (I'll refer to it as simply Sunset at Cubist Castle from now) and in 1999 in Black Foliage: Animation Music Vol. 1 (I refer to it as Black Foliage from now.) Also released an album compilation called Presents: Singles and beyond that has no songs from both albums.
Despite this short discography (although each of these albums is very long) The Olivia Tremor Control have left behind a great legacy in the world of psychedelic music.
Dusk at Cubist Castle includes 27 tracks (10 of which are titled "Green Typewriters" and is 74 minutes long. The album includes many catchy pop rock songs that seem be influenced by The Beatles & The Beach Boys, but maintaining a sparkling originality. They tend to push production tricks and singing the following structures level even beyond The Beatles and The Beach Boys never did. The album also includes some very experimental tracks spaced as track # 19 (the longest of typewriters "green" track.)
This album seems to be made for "a trip", but also functions as a tool for sober people to enter another state of mind. That is what truly psychedelic music can do.
But there is more to this music simply just being "trippy for trippy's sake." These songs are full of catchy melodies, instantly memorable riffs, and big balances. The wild experimentation only makes what is already great music all that much more interesting.
Black foliage also includes 27 tracks, although many of the themes are very short. In fact, five of the tracks are 15 seconds or less. The album has a slightly more polished sound, while maintaining the same base "lo-fi" sound. People usually go to talk about what the "FI" nature of this music. I think that the least interesting in this regard. So let's move on, eh?
Like Sunset at Cubist Castle, Black Foliage is full of bright catchy songs like "Hideaway". It also includes some tracks experimental long as "The bark and below it, which is more than 11 minutes. I like to compare with "Revolution # 9" but I think I've done anyway.
If you are a newcomer to The Olivia Tremor Control's Black Foliage a clue that most recommend, "Paranormal Echoes". In this song You can get a very good idea of what the psychedelic madness that is this band is all about.
